Apparently my FIL is obsessing over his lawn. H e retired earlier in the year and was expecting to be playing golf and out going to concerts etc. Now he's stuck at home with only the lawn for company - we need to get him a project asap...

That sounds like my grandparents yard. Our yard is a Darwin experiment. All we do is mow and keep it wet if it dries out.
